International Potato Institute (IPI) is an independent non-profit contemporary art institution in the progressive, sustainable art village of Fujino, Japan.
Dedicated to rethinking the human–nature relationship, IPI welcomes artists, designers, writers, and researchers to explore questions of ecology, sustainability, and cultural resilience through making, dialogue, and shared experience.
From an art and design perspective, we ask: How might creative practice reimagine ways of living on this planet?
Rooted in respect for nature, land-based knowledge, and planetary care, IPI cultivates exchange across geographies, disciplines, and generations.
At its core are an artist residency and participatory workshops where international practitioners collaborate with local communities, educational organizations, and cultural institutions. The work that emerges is often experimental, socially engaged, and site-responsive, expanding how art and design can contribute to more sustainable futures.
IPI functions as a hybrid platform—part residency, part field school, part research lab—embedded within a rural community known for its pioneering approach to sustainability and creative exchange.
It is a place for learning, collaboration, and imagination, where art and design meet local knowledge and global discourse to envision new ways of living and creating together.
